Too many authors make the mistake of thinking their name will carry their book to success. Especially if they have a wide audience or a large following.
But it’s not enough.
We all know the market for celebrity memoirs, politician memoirs, and books (both fiction and nonfiction) authored by celebrities and high-profile public figures.
The common assumption is that these books are automatic bestsellers.
Sometimes they are, and usually the publishers bank on these books being hits because the authors have notoriety.
And yet, there are celebrity-authored books that never take off.
If book success was all about the large audience and author notoriety, then why would these books fail?
A couple of examples of celebrity/high-profile authored books that flopped include:
- Linda Hogan’s Wrestling the Hulk: My Life Against the Ropes
- Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story
- Kris Jenner’s Kris Jenner… And All Things Kardashian
- Megan Markle’s The Bench
- Pippa Middleton’s Celebrate
Despite the high-profile names on these books, they were considered failures from the publishing side. They failed to sell higher numbers of copies, failed to make an impact, and failed to live up to publisher expectations.
Looking at book reviews, it comes down to a few factors. Most notably, quality, content, and public perception.
Nonfiction book success stems from a combination of factors—lead generation, target audience, branding, business opportunities—none of which can be substituted by a name on the cover, and all of which come from quality and content.
Your book has the chance to make an impact on your business and brand. To make a positive impact, work with a writing professional to ensure the content and quality live up to your name.
