Branding can Make or Break a Company

If you ever think your brand is unshakable, take a look at what’s happening with Tesla.

Once the leader in electronic vehicles, an innovative tech company trusted globally, is now facing a potentially irrevocable turn for the worse.

Why?

Brand misalignment.

Ever since Mr. Musk began touting his political alignments and spending more time on his political focus than on running his company, things have gone awry in the world of Tesla.

They are facing huge drops in sales, vandalism, and unprecedented stock drops and fluctuations, which have resulted in unmoved inventory, oversupply, inability to accept trade-ins, and a drop in value for the EVs overall.

How could this happen to a leading company that was the forerunner in the EV market?

Tesla accomplished what no one could in decades—they broke into the automobile market with a new make, a new vision, and innovative technology.

They seemed unstoppable.

Tesla is experiencing a classic case of brand misalignment, to which no company is immune.

In fact, the larger the company, the more susceptible it is to brand misalignment.

Mr. Musk positioned Tesla to be a Green, clean energy company with a mission to save the planet with environmentally friendly technologies, and the pursuit of clean air and water by changing the automotive industry.

A great message and a great brand that people were ready to buy into.

Unfortunately, when he allied himself with a specific political regime, he allied himself with policies and ideologies that contradicted all his branding.

As a result, most of the Tesla consumer base felt betrayed and misled.

And thus, Tesla tumbled into the chaos it faced for most of 2025, and going into 2026, it still hasn’t recovered.

As a business leader, there is a level of responsibility in representing your brand, upholding it, and maintaining it, even if it doesn’t align with personal values or your beliefs.

Consistency in branding can make or break a company, and a business book can establish trust in your brand, solidify your branding consistency and messaging, and show how you align with your brand to better spread your message and gain an audience ready to buy in.
