A new study, that’s the first of its kind, looks at the ROI for nonfiction business books.
This is a huge breakthrough study because before now, most of the data around books and their success has been geared toward fiction books and book sales.
I’m so excited to finally see the tangible numbers that support what I’ve been talking about when it comes to investing in and generating income from a nonfiction business book!
It comes as no surprise to me that book sales, advances, and royalties do not accurately reflect the ROI or income generation of business books.
The study dives into how when authors invest in their books they can generate significant returns in the form of:
- Speaking engagements
- Consulting
- Increased business activity
- Boosting the value of their personal brand
If you want numbers, the study covers the numbers, too.
It reported that 64% of published authors (of business books) made back their investment (this includes ghostwriting costs).
Authors who went into marketing and launching their books with a clear strategy and revenue goal showed profits of more than $96,000 within the first 6 months of their book’s release.
And here’s a little tidbit that helps emphasize the importance of working with a book writing professional. Ghostwritten books were four times as profitable as others.
As a whole, the study found that book sales rarely met expectations. Sales averaged around 4,600 for traditionally published books, 1,600 sales for hybrid published books, and 700 for self or indie published books.
In case anyone was wondering, none of those numbers hit bestseller list minimum requirements.
But, as you can see by the other numbers, the book sales didn’t predict book success or ROI. The authors included in this study discussed how it opened doors for them to explore new and larger revenue opportunities.
So, if you work with a ghostwriter and hire a good, knowledgeable PR team to launch your book, you could be looking at an ROI of $96,000 within the first six months of publication.
Your book’s going to be around a lot longer than six months and could continue to generate higher profit yields.
