It finally happened.

I had my first encounter with ghostwriters exclusively using AI and LLMs to generate content and the results were as I expected.

While I primarily ghostwrite nonfiction business books, I also like to ghostwrite fiction novels as a side passion.

Personally, I think a fiction background helps me write more entertaining nonfiction with vivid storytelling and helps me craft better memoirs or memoir aspects in nonfiction narratives, but I digress.

I ghostwrite fiction on the side to keep my storytelling sharp.

In a meeting with the group I ghostwrite fiction for, it was revealed that they’ve been encountering a lot of AI generated content. As in, chapters and manuscripts completely written by AI with no editing/tailoring/review.

The editors are noticing, and they aren’t impressed for two reasons.

First, the writing is generic and doesn’t meet the group’s standards for quality.

Secondly, without proper review, a lot of these chapters end up containing the Chatbot conversation tags or inserts.

One writer submitted a chapter that had a line right in the middle of everything that said, “And here’s the same segment written more intensely:”

Editors are asking writers to rewrite entire chapters manually.

Or, they are getting stuck rewriting them and it is becoming a strain on their time and resources.

Now, this group thrives off generating a lot of content in a short amount of time because their audience are ravenous consumers of material.

LLMs seem like a good solution.

But they have quality standards and despite being one of the few writing companies I’ve encountered that has been open to LLMs, they’ve put their foot down.

They have now come out and said that if any content is exclusively written by an LLM or with AI, the ghostwriter will be responsible for rewriting it at the expense of their time.

Editors are being encouraged to remind ghostwriters that LLMs can be used to enhance writing, not replace it.

This was a huge revelation for me to experience.

Despite their demand for lots of content, it is still preferably for it to be written by a human writer than churned out via LLM chatbots.

Here’s the caution for authors thinking of using LLMs to write their books:

• The material is generic
• Editors and trained eyes will know
• It can cost you more time and resources in the long run
