“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” – Maya Angelou.
One of the projects I worked on was the story of a woman’s experience being kidnapped and held for ransom for three months. We wrote about her experience in captivity, her experience with her captors, and the life that followed once she was released.
She suffered from Stockholm Syndrome, PTSD, and bouts of depression and anxiety, living in a constant state of fight or flight survival mode until she finally told her story 17 years later.
At the time of writing her book, she was working toward becoming a mental health coach, particularly for women suffering from traumatic experiences and the emotional and mental health toll it takes.
With the help of her book and appearances on podcasts, she has built a highly successful coaching business.
Her story is heartbreaking, terrifying, and inspiring all at once.
But she held onto her story for almost two decades, and while writing her book, she realized that never sharing it contributed to the trauma.
Even during the writing process, we went back and forth with details of her captivity that she wasn’t sure she wanted to share.
Eventually, she decided it was better to lay it all on the table.
Everyone has a story to tell, experiences that shaped them.
Sharing these stories is liberating, empowering, and impactful.
Your audience is waiting for you to tell your story.
