I always thought I was imposter syndrome averse.
But then it happened, and I never felt so… small and voiceless.
I was coaching a male client.
At the time, I had over 4 years of ghostwriting and book coaching experience and his topic was one I had over a decade of experience with (much longer than him).
Yet, every suggestion I made, every guiding remark, was met with pushback.
He repeatedly told me he felt like I didn’t understand the subject matter.
To move things along, we brought in another writer for collaboration. A writer who had no personal experience with the subject matter.
Immediately, my client went along with everything the collaborating writer suggested. Never questioned his knowledge or understanding of the topic.
This other writer and I had comparable professional experience, and nothing was suggested that I hadn’t already covered.
So, what was the big deal? Well, the other writer was a man.
It was the first time I felt like my experience, knowledge, and intelligence were overlooked based on my gender and I had to work hard to reclaim my confidence and my voice.
Research suggests more women than men experience imposter syndrome.
Women business leaders who author books solidify their expertise, build confidence, and inspire others to trust women’s voices.
Authoring a book can counteract imposter syndrome. That’s one of the reasons I’m self-publishing novels as a side project – to reclaim my voice and confidence.
