When Are You Ready to Write a Book

In business, a lot of success comes down to timing.

This is true for book writing.

But how do you know you’re ready to write a book?

The three components of business book readiness are:

  1. Quantifiable results
  2. Consistent branding and messaging
  3. Emotional openness

One of my book coaching clients was not ready to write and publish their book. He had a great idea and a solid goal, but he was still in the middle of his journey. He hadn’t come out the other side yet, and his book was meant to illustrate the benefits of his healing journey and their results.

But he didn’t have the results.

Do you know the result of what your product or service provides? With anecdotal evidence, can you recreate those results?

Both questions should have an affirmative answer before pursuing a book.

Business books encompass your brand and your message.

If you’re consistent in your branding and messaging, then you have a foundational layer for writing a book.

Another client of mine didn’t think he had a book in him. After going over his ideas, it was easy to tie them into his brand and message and we put together an incredible book. That brand and message have carried the marketability of his book now that it’s published.

There is an emotional component to book writing, too. I’ve had a few clients who think they are ready to write a book but when they see it coming together and their story on a page, it becomes triggering.

In these instances, they either shut down and the rest of the book is shallow and emotionless. Or they take a hiatus and sometimes don’t return.

If you can quantify the results of your product or service, have consistent branding and messaging, and you’re ready and willing to be vulnerable and open, you’re ready to write a book.
