Where Does the Juice Come From?

Author by Design What's in it For You?

A prospective client told me he started writing a book and then stopped because he didn’t see the benefit since sales wouldn’t make up for the time and money put into writing the book.

His exact wording was, “It seemed like there wasn’t enough juice to squeeze out of a book.”

In this context, “juice” was money.

Like many entrepreneurs, business leaders, and coaches, he defaulted to the misconception that books are about selling copies, and he couldn’t move past it enough to see the true benefits of authoring a book.

So, what’s in it for you when you author a book?

The easy answer is that authoring a book offers:

  • Lead generation
  • Additional revenue streams – coaching, speaking engagements, consulting, courses
  • Brand integrity
  • Industry expertise/authority
  • Expanded reach
  • Larger audiences
  • Business growth opportunities

My clients who have leveraged their books for the listed benefits above have seen impressive gains from the areas they’ve put the most focus on.

One of them builds her brand and audience through podcast guest spots as well as hosting her own podcast.

Another flies all around the world for monthly (or more frequent) speaking engagements at conventions where he has the chance to pick up more business clients.

A third client made a name for herself by entering her book in award contests and winning 4 book awards, which boosted her visibility and grew her coaching business.

Yet another client uses his book at local, live workshops he hosts, and since publishing, he’s increased his workshops to twice a year and gained local sponsorship with radio ads and newspaper features.

Notice how none of those success stories include pushing book sales?

There are many avenues to reap the benefits of a business book, and you can choose what matches your business, goals, and comfort levels.

My prospective client, despite discussing these opportunities, gave excuse after excuse as to why each of those possibilities wouldn’t work for him, again, solely hung up on sales.

The benefits of authoring a business book are proven, but they are also what you make them.
