What does it take to become a thought leader and what does it actually mean to be one?

By definition, a thought leader is an individual or an organization that has a unique perspective, which stands out in their field or industry, and who others turn to for guidance and answers. As the term might suggest, thought leaders lead others in their thinking. They are pioneers in perspective and insight.

Thought leaders are at the forefront of their fields. They are experts in a specific niche and their voices hold authority to others in that arena.

There are many benefits to being a thought leader, but it can also come with a higher level of responsibility.

Being a thought leader means sticking to your views and your statements, and many times, arguing for them when they are challenged. Thought leadership comes with work, consistency, and putting yourself in the public eye.

So, what does it mean to be a thought leader, how do you become one, and what are the benefits?

Let’s take a look.

What Does it Take to be a Thought Leader?

The term “thought leader” is about more than profits, industry status, and generating content. Visibility doesn’t make thought leaders.

One of the driving forces behind thought leadership is passion. Passion combined with expertise in a particular niche lays the groundwork for you to stand out against others in that same field.

Know where your strengths are and focus on a small set of issues or topics you are both passionate about and experienced within that arena.

The next aspects of thought leadership are being authentic and innovative.

Authenticity is key because if you’re not consistent in your stance or there’s a lack of genuine concern or interest, credibility goes right out the window.

Innovation is what sets you apart from the rest of the pack. When you approach topics from unique perspectives, ask unasked questions, and share provocative thoughts, it allows you to stand out and be seen.

I’ve seen some articles say that thought leaders need to be relevant. I don’t ascribe to that thinking because when you have an innovative approach to any topic, you can make it relevant.

Thought leaders are experts in a small set of issues they are passionate about, and they are authentic, consistent and innovative. Being a thought leader takes commitment, work, and awareness.

Benefits of Thought Leadership

When you reach thought leadership status, you’ll stand out for a few reasons.

First and foremost, being a thought leader turns you into a trusted voice of authority in your field or industry. Trust, in turn, leads to business and platform growth. Your audience will be more likely to stick with you or your organization when there’s pre-established trust.

You’ll also increase your credibility and reputation among colleagues, peers, and even with your competition. You’ll further stand out within your niche and earn the respect of those within your niche.

As a thought leader, you can influence and inspire others, shape the business agenda in your field, and advance your leadership strategy.

All of these benefits lead to business growth opportunities, increased revenue from new opportunities and from new clients/customers, and more visibility in your market.

While there are great benefits to being a thought leader, reaching that status and maintaining it take continued work and effort.

Responsibility Comes with Authority

Everyone has heard the quote “With great power comes great responsibility.”

When you achieve thought leader status you put yourself in a position of authority and influence, which can be translated to a powerful position. This also puts you in the public eye.

Here’s why authenticity and consistency are so important.

When you have all eyes on you promoting a certain passion, perspective, and innovation, if anything you do or say (intentional or not) deviates from that angle, it can tear down everything you built around your thought leadership persona.

That’s where the work comes in. Maintaining thought leadership is constant effort and work to make sure everything you’re putting out where the public can see it aligns with your leadership platform.

We’ve all seen what can happen when public figures get caught in a lie or a contradictory statement.

I mentioned before that being a thought leader means standing up for what you believe in and fighting for it even when challenged.

While that is important, another aspect of thought leadership is curiosity. If you’re challenged, explore the alternative perspective. Be open to hearing counterpoints and criticism, and instead of shutting it down, think of how it fits in to your perspective.

When you combine passion, expertise, and curiosity, you have a chance to be truly introspective, innovative, and enlightened in your area of expertise.

Achieving thought leadership status is just the beginning. To maintain it, you’ve got to keep working at it with authenticity, passion, consistency, and curiosity.

How to Become a Thought Leader

The first step to becoming a thought leader is authenticity.

When you apply authenticity to your strengths and passions, you have the foundation to break out as a thought leader.

From there, you can generate thought-provoking, innovative content for your channels. Engage in the conversation that your content starts with a consistent, confident voice.

Know what you stand for, know your beliefs, and know your limitations. Operate within your area of expertise and don’t stray far from your purpose, values, or personal narrative.

You can create your own story around your values, thoughts, ideas, passions, and expertise. Keep shaing that narrative because it’s that clarity and consistency that help build your thought leader persona.

Be ready to defend and articulate your views but also be open to exploring challenges and counterpoints.

Author a book.

There are a lot of channels to get yourself established as a thought leader, but to grow your leadership strategy, authoring a book is a huge step. It gives you a platform to share your innovative thoughts and ideas and opens up doors for speaking engagements that will further grow your influence and spread your voice.

Being a thought leader comes with many benefits, but it takes work, effort, and consistency. If you’re ready to put in the work, let your voice be heard and don’t miss the opportunity to connect with others.

You’ll be known for something when you can confidently and consistently present yourself and articulate your unique perspectives and ideas. Your audience and business growth will be the natural byproduct.
